The exterior area of the house is approximately 4176m2, part of which is pine forest. The intervention should create a naturalized outdoor space for contemplation, safeguard the pine forest, increase privacy within the property while ensuring visibility of the landscape, and guarantee coherence and continuity between the architectural and landscape architecture projects.
The concept of a forest-garden (mata-jardim) relates to the idea that a forest, a natural space where the dynamics of Nature prevail over human intervention, can also serve the functions of a garden. With this idea, we propose a place where the conditions are right for Nature to evolve:
- The wild environment found in the pine forest expands, in a more organized way, to the rest of the property;
- The tree mass is extended throughout the property, contributing to the continuum naturale on an urban scale;
- Mediterranean climate species are selected, taking into account their natural form and size;
- Natural materials are chosen, and rocky elements are incorporated;
- Despite the wild character, aesthetic effects (ambiences, views) are considered, and functional issues (privacy, shade) are ensured.
Some areas to be highlighted are the existing pine forest, the rock garden, the front garden, and the back garden. The pine forest will only undergo maintenance actions, preserving its macrostructure. The rock garden emerges from the demolition of a wall to facilitate access to the garage and consists of a rocky slope covered with dynamic vegetation. This slope forms the transition between the pine forest and the garden. The front garden is covered with meadow and punctuated by trees, creating an amplitude that allows for scale in the house and leaves visual openings to the landscape. Near the facade, biodiverse vegetation punctuated by rocky elements frames the building and unites the different areas. In the back, a large and multifunctional space is planned to support daily activities. It will be covered with gravel and will have a planter with aromatic plants. Next to the porch, a water tank provides a visual and auditory setting.
