Residential garden of approximately 1100 m², located in Reguengo Grande, Lourinhã. The client’s intention is to create a pleasant space, integrated into the surrounding landscape, composed of different typologies and functions. The intervention area is located on one of the southwest-facing slopes of the Galvão River. The rocky terrain and the sloping hillside, where terraces are defined by the rocks, are the main constraints of the project and, at the same time, the element that characterizes and unifies the space. The views are expansive, especially on the lower terraces which function as large viewpoints over the Cesaredas Plateau. The character of the surrounding landscape, the biophysical and bioclimatic aspects of the site, the pre-existing elements, as well as the coherence and physical and visual continuity between the existing building and the exterior space were taken into consideration, viewing the property as a whole.

The original space already possessed a certain character of its own, which the project aims to enhance by taking advantage of its unique features. There is a clear distinction between the front and back of the house, that is, in terms of importance, functions, and spatiality. The land behind the house is used sporadically and should maintain its natural character – low-impact intervention, native vegetation, and an organic layout. The front can also be divided between the upper terraces, characterized by having direct access to the house, and the lower terraces, which are used less frequently. The pathways are seen as spaces for experimentation and not just for walking; a recess in the rock next to the house alludes to a winter garden, covered and with benches around a wood-burning fireplace; a dining area next to the house with a landscaped vegetable garden; the elevated swimming pool, whose stairs function in continuity with existing stairs; the respective leisure area characterized by the bordering bench that surrounds a multifunctional area, where the vegetation consists predominantly of cacti and succulents; a seating area that functions as a viewpoint at the back of the house; An intimate living area at the back, hidden by the terrain and vegetation.

In this project, materials, more than form, are the unifying element of the space and reflect pre-existing features. Along the pathways, the rocky terrain seems to flow into the garden in an organized, harmonious, and comfortable way, using natural stone slabs and pebbles. In the main living areas, the stone slabs have smaller, cemented joints to create greater comfort. The introduction of beige slabs allows for greater comfort in certain situations, highlights elements, and combines the rusticity of the stone with the necessary contemporary feel in the more prominent areas. Earth tones, mainly beige and gray, will be a constant, interspersed with the green of the vegetation. The vegetation will be the element creating ambiences and spatial dynamics. It serves to frame elements, as a visual marker to guide circulation, to inhibit passage to steep areas, and to create visual dynamics and different ambiences in each of the areas, always maintaining coherence throughout the space. The design primarily features native species with the occasional introduction of exotic ornamental species. The aim is to create a space that is both harmonious and far from monotonous. The garden will be integrated both into the landscape and internally within its various areas.
